Mental Health First Aid
Gain the skills and knowledge needed to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges in members of your rural community by getting certified in Mental Health First Aid for Adults.
Description
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), known as the CPR of mental health, teaches you to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health or substance use challenges among adults. This evidence-based, early-intervention course from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing uses community-specific scenarios, activities, and videos to help you recognize these challenges and provide initial support until professional help is available.
Certification course covers:
- Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges.
- Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
- How to interact with a person in crisis.
- How to connect a person with help.
- Expanded content on trauma, substance use, and self-care.
Common course components and requirements:
- Pre-work: 2-hour, self-paced online learning.
- Participate in an optional pre-course orientation.
- Live training: 2-day, interactive, instructor-led training, approximately 4.5-5.5-hours per day.
- Post-work: 1-hour self-paced quiz and a brief reflection, reinforcing key concepts and practical application.
Registration is required. A minimum number of registrants and attendees who complete the pre-work is required; otherwise, the training may be rescheduled to a later date.
The registration, pre- and post-course work process for the MHFA certification is as follows:
- Learners register here
- TGH instructor sends an invitation to the learners to create a profile in the MHFA Connect platform (the certification issuer).
- Learners create MHFA Connect profile
- TGH instructor registers learners for MHFA class
- Learners complete pre-work (may be done during orientation)
- Learners attend instructor-led session(s)
- TGH instructor marks completion in MHFA Connect
- Learners complete post-work on MHFA Connect
- Learners download certificate
Technology requirements: Internet access, computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone with video, microphone, and speaker capabilities.
