Esophageal Cancer Screening
Tampa General Hospital, in partnership with EsoGuard, is offering an Esophageal Cancer Screening for those who meet risk factor criteria.
Description
According to The National Cancer Institute and the American Journal of Gastroenterology, “Esophageal Cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the U.S. and has increased over 500% in the last 40 years.” The screening takes less than a minute and involves swallowing a capsule to swab the esophagus. The cells collected and ensuing diagnostic, DNA testing will determine if you have precancer or cancer cells in your esophagus.
The American Gastroenterological Association and American College of Gastroenterology state you are at risk if you meet any three of the seven criteria below:
- Heartburn/reflux/GERD
- Male
- Obesity
- 50 years or older
- Caucasian
- Past or present tobacco user
- Family history of Barrett’s Esophagus or Esophageal Cancer
If you meet the risk factor criteria and have health insurance, please sign up for your 15-minute appointment on the date that works best for you.
Notes from EsoGuard:
- Please bring your driver's license and medical insurance card to your appointment. There is NO out-of-pocket cost for EsoGuard screening, but your insurance will be billed. You are not responsible/liable for any portion not covered by insurance, up to and including the total cost of the test if your insurance denies coverage. We do not submit any unpaid claims to a collection’s agency at this time.
- No food or drink for 2 hours before your appointment time. You may have small sips of water leading up to your testing time if needed.
